4. Luke Fickell, Cincinnati head coach

Fickell has turned around the Bearcats’ program quickly, with back-to-back double-digit win seasons and a chance to surpass the 11 wins from last year with the AAC title game and a bowl game remaining.

Fickell is a candidate to move on, as the athletic director that hired him (Mike Bohn) has taken the same post at USC. Fickell is not a serious candidate to replace Clay Helton if he is fired, but his deep ties to Ohio State as a former player, assistant coach and interim head coach point to his candidacy at Boston College.

Boston College athletic director Martin Jarmond was an assistant/deputy athletic director in Columbus for eight of the 15 years Fickell spent there (2009-2016). Perhaps the two forged some sort of relationship, which Jarmond would circle back to now as he looks to replace Addazio with an upgrade.

From Fickell’s end, it would be easy to see Boston College as a lateral move or even a step down from Cincinnati. If salary matters are relatively equal, staying put might be the best move. But the powers that be in Chesnut Hill should make an effort to get him, even if a quick rejection comes.
