The last season of Vikings premieres tonight. Here’s all the information you need to know for catching the final installment of this riveting series.
Bloody, dramatic Vikings is back, set on wrapping up the story of famous raider Ragnar Lothbrok’s warring sons. Bjorn Ironside (Alexander Ludwig) had won back Kattegat, and Ivar The Boneless (Alex Høgh Andersen) had been ousted. But Lothbrok’s sons wouldn’t be namesakes to their father if they didn’t like adventure. In addition to Bjorn and Ivar’s travels, Ubbe wants to head to Iceland to search of Floki, who may or may not be dead, despite perishing last season in the cave. Hvitserk (Marco Ilsø) is pondering his demons from drug addiction as well as the terrible choices he’s made. Sigurd (David Lindström) was killed by cruel Ivar at the end of season 4 in a petty fight.
Bjorn is torn between striving to be a benevolent ruler of a thriving trading kingdom but is called to venture when King Harald (Peter Franzén) pleads for him to help him escape King Olaf (Steven Berkoff). It’s a similar quandary to what Ragnar (the still sorely missed, wonderful Travis Fimmel) found himself in when he ruled Kattegat. His quests to England (the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex) while lining their coffers also resulted in self-destructive overreaching ambitions that lead to the destruction of his Nordic settlement and ultimately his own death. Will Bjorn be a better leader, or will he also succumb to the same mistakes his father made? Will he be able to unite all of Norway?
Considering that the sons of legendary Ragnar were almost as famous as him, it makes fitting sense to end the series with a final chapter on where all the sons end up. Michael Hirst’s drama was the first scripted series on the History Channel and a groundbreaking hit for the channel. The attention to detail has been greatly appreciated by fans, with many of the actors hailing from Sweden, Finland, and Denmark, in a bid to craft a reality that befits that time in history. Even if the first few seasons were superior to the latter half of the series run, Vikings excelled during the golden age of television.
