YouTube plays it safe with YouTube Rewind 2019
With 2019 coming to a close, YouTube has released this year’s YouTube Rewind. With a different format from the previous years, are they playing it too safe?
YouTube is a mecca of information and entertainment and has been a staple in many people’s lives for the past decade. This rewind has got to be special. So what should we expect, and what’s been hot so far this year?
This year’s Rewind, titled For the Record, is much different than previous years. We’re used to seeing something more artistic, a bunch of creators getting together to make something new. But with 2018’s being the most disliked video on YouTube, this year they tried something new.
2019 Rewind features multiple top 10 lists, showing its viewers the things that they liked over the past year. It’s much more of a “rewind,” showing actual clips of the viral videos. Hopefully this video doesn’t get as many dislikes.
But is this the kind of rewind we want to see? It feels more like a wrap-up than anything exciting. Playing it safe after last year’s fiasco might have been the right move, but here’s hoping this isn’t a trend they continue.
A lot of the top trending videos were surprising. A lot of you may remember the feud between Tati Westbrook and James Charles that took place earlier in the year. At the very top of the trending list is James Charles with “No More Lies” his response to Tati’s “Bye Sister” which shows up nowhere on the list.
Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star also top a lot of these lists. Shane’s “Investigating Conspiracies with Shane Dawson” was third on the list of top trending videos, as well as tenth on the most liked creator videos list. Jeffree Star took seventh place on the top trending videos list with “Kylie Skin Review with Shane Dawson”.
Of course, “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus found it’s home as the number 1 music video in the US. On that same list, Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” came in at number 7 and Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” came in at number 9.
MrBeast’s “Make This Video The Most Liked Video On YouTube” came in at the number one spot on the most liked creator videos list, which wasn’t much of a shock, since it has over 10.9 million likes, 5.2 million more than the second spot, PewDiePie’s “Marzia & Felix – Wedding 19.08.2019.” PewDiePie also held the first spot as the most viewed creator.
Did anything in YouTube Rewind shock you? And how did you feel about the new format of the video? Were they playing it safe after all the hate on last year’s video? You can watch this year’s YouTube Rewind here. Let us know in the comments what you thought.
