Marina Rodriguez vs. Cynthia Calvillo was declared a majority draw (29-28, 28-28, 28-28) at UFC Washington D.C  on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2019, live from Washington, DC.

Here’s a round-by-round breakdown of how it went.

ROUND 1

The round started off with slow-paced striking. Calvillo circled the outside of the octagon. Rodriguez was using her reach to her advantage, throwing from a distance. Calvillo got a takedown, resisting Rodriguez trying to take control on the way down. They stood back up shortly after, with Rodriguez coming forward with tons of strikes. Calvillo was getting pieced up, especially in the clinch. Calvillo initiated a body lock after getting hit with a right straight. Rodriguez scored a good head kick exiting the clinch. She clinched up a couple more times, hitting Calvillo with hard knees each time. Calvillo scored another takedown in the closing seconds of the round.

ROUND 2

Rodriguez had the faster punches at the start of the second round. She continued with the knees in the clinch when she had the chance. Just like in the round before, Rodriguez often stayed out of striking distance for Calvillo.

20-18 Rodriguez

ROUND 3

Calvillo scored a double leg takedown in the second minute of the round. Calvillo tried for a kimura, but then let it go and took the back of Rodriguez. She let her hands go from the position, although Rodriguez kept moving and stayed in the fight. Rodriguez endured the large output of strikes and eventually got back to her feet.

29-28 Rodriguez

The fight kept Rodriguez undefeated, and it was the second draw she received in her career. It was also the fourth fight in a row for Rodriguez that went to a decision.

Calvillo snapped a 10-month absence from the octagon on Saturday, with her fight before being a win over Cortney Casey.

The draw was the second of the evening, as Cody Stamann and Song Yadong battle to a majority draw earlier in the show.
