Who is hosting the 2020 Golden Globes?

After a delightful year with Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, Ricky Gervais takes over hosting duties at the 2020 Golden Globes.

Award season will be in full, aggressive swing when the Golden Globes air on Sunday, Jan. 5 and of course, with nominations and all the like, it’s an easy leap to question the event’s host. The 2020 Golden Globes will see Ricky Gervais take over hosting duties for a record fifth time.

The British comedian is a curious choice. For one, he himself said he would never present the awards show again, having hosted previously in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2016. However, Gervais said that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association “made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening.”

Irrefutable offers aside, Gervais seems an incongruous comedian for the time and one feels inclined to brace themselves for cringe-worthy jokes about diversity, Me Too and Baby Yoda — objective goods that are all too susceptible to bad jokes.

The question of the value of an award show host is an interesting one. The 2019 Oscars, almost on accident, showed how successful an award show can be with no host and tight script. But then again, the 2019 Emmys — also opting to go host-less — was an utter mess of network-forced segments and chaotic intros. Even though last year’s Globes hosts, Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, were only okay (crushing, considering the potential), the choice to go back to Gervais feels like depressingly safe, the equivalent of the Oscars booking a Jimmy Kimmel or Fallon.

Speaking of which, the 2020 Oscars have yet to announce a host.
