4. 2018 Rose Bowl – Georgia vs. Oklahoma

The 2018 semifinal featured a contrast in styles as Heisman winner Baker Mayfield and his high octane Oklahoma offense took on Roquan Smith and a physical Georgia team.

The Sooners fast pace offense proved too much early on as they walked down the field on the opening drive to take a 7-0 lead. Georgia would answer on their opening drive, but Oklahoma kept their foot on the gas and took a 31-17 heading into halftime.

However, the third quarter belonged to Georgia as they shut out the Sooners and continued to pound the rock the Sony Michel and Nick Chubb. By the start of the fourth, the game had flipped entirely with the Bulldogs taking a 38-31 lead.

Oklahoma proved their toughness, though, as they tied the game and finally got a play from their struggling defense with a fumble return to regain the lead 45-38 with 6:52 left. But then, it was Georgia’s turn to answer once again, and they did just that as Chubb score to tie it back with 57 seconds left in regulation.

Overtime seemed the only appropriate way to end a game the featured multiple ties and lead changes. Each team traded field goals in the first overtime, but Georgia’s special teams came up huge, blocking a 27-yard field goal attempt in the second overtime. Needing any score to win, Michel took a direct snap and broke for a touchdown to end the game and send Georgia to the national championship.

After what was a fantastic Rose Bowl the year before between USC and Penn State, this one somehow surpassed it and is the highest-scoring Rose Bowl ever.
