Max Holloway: The legacy continues

Max Holloway is continuing to build his legacy. He joined the UFC back in 2012 where he took a last-minute fight against Dustin Poirier. Since that moment, he’s put together a 17-4 record in the Octagon. Even with the second hiccup at the hands of Poirier at UFC 236, Holloway is still considered one of the best fighters in the promotion. Dispatching Volkanovski on Saturday will help build that legacy, and perhaps continue the build for Holloway to make the move back to lightweight.

Holloway’s 145-pound resume includes a “whos-who” of the division. He has two wins over Jose Aldo, along with defeating Frankie Edgar, Anthony Pettis, Ricardo Lamas, Jeremy Stephens, Charles Oliveira and many others. He’s already defeated three of the top five men in the weight class and is fighting the fourth on Saturday. Zabit Magomedsharipov seems to be the next contender for the title but wins and losses aren’t the only factors in determining who gets a crack at the belt. When the smoke clears this weekend, Holloway may be looking for other challenges outside the featherweight division.

It’s a frequent trend in today’s MMA landscape for champions to look for new challenges in other weight classes. Randy Couture started the trend that has led to the storylines around double champions like McGregor, Cejudo, Nunes and others. Holloway may be looking to add to his legacy by joining that list, but he must get through a tough challenge in Volkanovski on Saturday.
