Heisman snubs: 10 best players who got the stiff-arm from Heisman voters
By John Buhler
This is the Heisman Trophy race that serves as the genesis of this slideshow. The 2018 Heisman was Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa‘s to lose. The sophomore came in during the second half of the 2017 National Championship to propel Alabama to victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. Tagovailoa had won the starting job over Jalen Hurts in 2018 and absolutely dominated.
The Crimson Tide were perfect heading into the 2018 SEC Championship where they would face the same Georgia team at the same stadium that decided the previous national title. Unfortunately for Tagovailoa, he played terribly against Kirby Smart‘s Georgia defense, succumbed to injury and was replaced by none other than Hurts to clinch a playoff spot for the Crimson Tide.
Alabama would go on to play for the national title but was humiliated by the Clemson Tigers. While the Crimson Tide weren’t good enough to win it all, it was pretty much a shame that Kyler Murray snatched up the Heisman Trophy during Championship Weekend during the Big 12 Championship. The Oklahoma Sooners had no problem putting away the Texas Longhorns.
Murray had a great year at Oklahoma and parlayed that into being the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. However, nobody thought he was going to win the Heisman until Tagovailoa fell apart in Atlanta vs. the Dawgs. With Tagovailoa out for the year and likely not returning to Tuscaloosa in 2020, this was the Heisman Trophy he certainly had stolen from him.
