Dinamo Zagreb face Manchester City at Maksimir on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
The Champions League group stage wraps up on Wednesday with Dinamo Zagreb hosting Manchester City. The Citizens have won the group and will advance to the knockout stage. Dinamo Zagreb are third in the group, one point behind Shakhtar Donetsk and one point ahead of Atalanta. The Croatian club can advance to the Champions League knockout stage for the first time in club history if they beat Manchester City and Shakhtar do not win.
Dinamo Zagreb enter the final game of the group stage with a good chance of advancing to the knockout stage for the first time ever. Wednesday’s game will arguably be the biggest game in club history and Dinamo are in a beneficial position. Zagreb have to beat the one team in the group that has already clinched a spot in the knockout stage. While the Citizens might rest starters, Atalanta and Shakhtar both need to win. If Atalanta do not win, their European campaign will end. If Zagreb are going to advance to their first Champions League knockout stage, they will need a strong performance from Mislav Orsic, who leads the club with 17 goals.
Manchester City won the first game against Dinamo Zagreb 2-0. However, since they have already won the group, City are unlikely to play their starters in the return fixture. Manager Pep Guardiola will likely give his reserve players some extra playing time. The extra rest will only benefit City as they try to make up the 14-point deficit in the Premier League title race during a very busy month of games.
While a third straight Premier League title is unlikely, Guardiola knows that his tenure in charge of City will be measured by success in the Champions League. The Champions League title is the lone title that has eluded City. The Citizens have advanced to the knockout stage for the seventh straight season but have only made it to the semifinals once before.
