In the middle of the week, Valencia and Real Madrid advanced to the knockout stage of the Champions League. On Sunday, the two clubs face off in La Liga at Valencia’s Mestalla. Real Madrid enter the weekend tied for first place in La Liga with Barcelona. The Bats are tied for sixth with 26 points.
Valencia shocked Ajax, winning 1-0 in Amsterdam to advance to the Champions League round of 16 for the first time since 2013. In La Liga, the Bats are trying to catch up after a slow start to the season. The poor start cost Marcelino his job and he was replaced by former Real Madrid midfielder Albert Celades as manager. It took Celades a couple of games to find his stride as manager but Valencia have come together. The Bats have won four of their past five La Liga games. Valencia are unbeaten in eight La Liga games at the Mestalla this season. However, the Bats have settled for four draws at their home stadium.
Real Madrid easily advanced out of their Champions League group. In La Liga, Zinedine Zidane’s team have won five of their last six games and have lost only one game this season. Real have scored the second-most goals this season and have conceded the second-fewest goals. Karim Benzema is having a great season. The French striker leads the club with 11 goals and five assists. Benzema will be the key to Real’s attack on Sunday with Eden Hazard sidelined with a foot injury.
