3. Spencer Rattler, QB, Oklahoma

Perhaps the most intriguing college football storyline to follow in the 2020 season will be Lincoln Riley developing his first quarterback since taking over as head coach for the Oklahoma Sooners. In his three years, he’s had three phenomenal players at the helm of the offense with Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts. However, all three quarterbacks were transfers into Norman.

With Hurts set to head to the NFL with his NCAA eligibility exhausted, the attention will likely turn to Spencer Rattler. The No. 11 overall recruit from the 2019 class and the No. 1 pro-style quarterback, per 247Sports, is almost completely unproven. With Hurts at the helm in 2019, Rattler only had eight passing attempts on the year in spot relief duty. And while he flashed potential, that’s not enough to glean any information from.

What we do know is this: Mayfield won the award, Murray won the award and Hurts was then a finalist for the award, largely thanks to Riley’s offense. And while we don’t know what Rattler will be at the college level, we do know that he’s a highly touted recruit boasting immense raw potential.

In truth, Rattler might be more of a wild card than this would indicate. Having said that, Riley’s quarterback-friendly offense, a revolving door of top-tier offensive weapons at Oklahoma and the potential of the young quarterback make him an intriguing option as a potential 2020 Heisman candidate. It’d be a bad bet to wager against a Sooners quarterback at this point.
