5 dark horse picks to challenge for 2020 Heisman Trophy
2. Zamir White, Georgia RB
- 2019 Stats: 60 attempts, 316 yards, 2 TDs
Georgia’s running backs have had a lot of success over the years, but they haven’t had a back finish in the top three of Heisman voting since Garrison Hearst in 1992.
Zamir White was third on the team in carries in 2019, but with D’Andre Swift (draft) and Brian Herrion (senior) both leaving, he could take the lion’s share of the carries. White came to the program with big expectations as a highly ranked recruit, and he has flashed at times this season.
Kirby Smart has proven he wants to have a physical run-first football team, so he is going to provide ample opportunity for whoever is the starter. And despite their rough showing in the SEC title game, Georgia is still a talented team and should be a playoff contender in 2020, especially if Jake Fromm stays for his senior year.
The Heisman is becoming more and more a best quarterback award, but a top running back on a playoff-contending team where the offense runs through him has the best chance.
