5 moves the Yankees still need to make after signing Gerrit Cole
Contrary to popular belief, Brian Cashman hasn’t gone on a long vacation after signing Gerrit Cole. The Yankees still have moves to make this winter.
The Yankees’ front office isn’t going to take their foot off the gas pedal after landing Gerrit Cole in free agency. Brian Cashman understands there is still significant work to do before the 2020 season begins. The only real question is what moves New York still needs to make to solidify their roster.
Fortunately for the rest of MLB, it’s highly unlikely that the Yankees are going to land another big fish in free agency. Instead, look for the organization to focus their attention on making some moves around the margins.
There’s also a strong possibility that Cashman will be even more active than usual on the trade market. The team still has a few relatively high-profile holes to fill before Opening Day arrives. Read on to discover five things that still remain left on the Yankees’ to do list.
5. Sign a middle infielder
Letting Didi Gregorius leave via free agency was a regrettable, but totally justifiable decision by the Yankees’ brass. He’ll play a big role for the Phillies moving forward, but New York needed the cash he wanted to ink Cole.
The obvious plan is to move Gleyber Torres to shortstop and allow DJ LeMahieu to hold down second base on an everyday basis. The organization also has both Tyler Wade and Thairo Estrada ready to contribute in backup roles behind them.
Even so, expect the Yankees to sign a veteran middle infielder to give manager Aaron Boone a more proven commodity heading into the regular season. Bringing someone like Adeiny Hechavarria back to the Bronx could prove to be a terrific solution for the team’s need for more infield depth. The Yankees aren’t going to spend big on a utility infielder, but adding one more to the roster should be a priority for Cashman in the coming weeks.
