10 of the best pop culture and entertainment memes of 2019
If there’s one thing on social media that sums up our thoughts in the best way, it has to be the memes. And we definitely had a great 2019 with these pop culture and entertainment gems of memes.
With 2019 ending, it’s the perfect time to take a look back at some of the best moments of the year. And this means that we have to take a look at the memes that made social media fun and also connected us all.
Pop culture and entertainment are a big part of what brings people together on social media. Sometimes this means finding the perfect moment to transform into a meme.
From Avengers: Endgame to Smudge the Cat, there have been plenty of viral moments that have been perfectly captured and shared via meme. So, whether it’s a fandom-related meme or just a chance to love Baby Yoda, these are 10 of the best memes from 2019 across entertainment and pop culture.

Speaking of Avengers: Endgame, remember all the memes that people made using the character posters? Perhaps the best was the one that combined two different fandoms — John Wick and the Avengers. After all, what could be better than a picture of Wick holding his puppy with the Avengers tagline of “Avenge the Fallen” over the image? Seriously, this might be one of my favorite memes from 2019 just because of Keanu Reeves holding a puppy.
Next up we have the star of the last two months of 2019: Baby Yoda. There are a lot of memes revolving around this instantly iconic Mandalorian character. And while there are a lot of good ones, I admit that this one is my personal favorite. Not only does it combine my two favorite things, Baby Yoda and iced coffee (there is a Starbucks version and a Dunkin’ version like the one shown), but it’s also true. It doesn’t matter how cold it is, ice coffee all the way!
In 2019, we saw the end of Game of Thrones, which was controversial to say the least. But at least they gave us some great screencaps to create memes with. And one of the best has to be of Daenarys squinting with a forced smile on her face. In a game of “caption this” on social media, fans were quick to come up with descriptions of the moment, and perhaps one of the favorites had to do with how mom looks at you when you mess up in front of people.
With the release of “Old Town Road,” the song became the gift that kept on giving. Not only did we get multiple versions of the song, but we also got plenty of memes out of it. And one of our favorites has to be the one posted by Lil Nas X himself. I mean seriously, it’s too perfect of a take on what happened with the song to begin with.
Don’t get me wrong, I love Harry Styles. He has a great voice and he has no problem saying and doing what he wants and thinks is right. But the Met Gala is known for its unique and sometimes iconic looks. It’s also where some of the best memes are born. And thanks to the look Styles chose to rock at the Met Gala, we got a few goodies. However, my favorite has to be the comparison to him and Daffy Duck. How can you not giggle every time you see this? It’s all in good fun, and it’s honestly kind of cute.
There’s no doubt that much of 2019 was all about Avengers: Endgame, and that means that many of this year’s best memes involve Marvel characters. So there’s no way we could overlook this one that makes it clear that Tom from Tom & Jerry could easily be at least four of the Avengers all on his own. (And who else thinks he might have done a better job in some cases?) This is one of those memes that some people might have forgotten, but Tom the cat is really too iconic not to show some love to.
When Black Mirror dropped new episodes on Netflix this year, they included some big names in all three episodes. But it was the one featuring Miley Cyrus that really delivered on the memes. Not only were there plenty that focused on the major song from the episode, “On a Roll,” but there were also a number of callbacks to her time on Hannah Montana. So, it probably comes as no surprise that one of the best points out the similarities between Hannah’s sidekick, Lola, and Ashley O (her character in Black Mirror).
At some point, we had to acknowledge that 2019 was the year of Keanu Reeves. And once we do that, we also have to admit that some of the best memes of the year revolve around the actor. In fact, I could probably come up with 10 of the best Keanu Reeves memes of 2019 and still have plenty that get left behind. But this might be the most on-point of them all. Seriously, it’s exactly how we are when it comes to just his name coming up in conversation.
One of the most prevalent memes on the internet was the Real Housewives ladies versus the cat, which has been circulating over the last few months of 2019. Each side has their take on a situation or an argument, and while there have been some good ones, it feels like the Christmas-themed memes are some of the funnier ones. For me, this is the one that made me laugh out loud for real, which means it topped my list of the favorite take on this particular meme. And if you were wondering, the cat is Insta-famous, and goes by the name Smudge.
For the final meme of 2019, it has to be this use of combining multiple memes in one. Not only is this one a play off of the cat versus the housewives, but it also gives us Adam Driver from Marriage Story versus Baby Yoda. It feels like the perfect way to end the year and the meme is too cute. This is like Star Wars versus Star Wars in some ways. And honestly, if it means more Baby Yoda I am here for it. Much like Keanu Reeves inspired a lot of memes this year, so did Baby Yoda, and he hasn’t even been part of the pop culture scene until recently.
There were so many amazing memes in 2019. And with so many pop culture and entertainment moments to choose from, it was hard to choose 10 of the best. However, there are some that are just more iconic than others. These are the 10 that stuck out the most and will be remembered long after 2019 has finally ended.
