2019 NFL power rankings, Week 17: Bengals are No. 32 but pick No. 1
Recap: The disappointing Chargers were back at home for the second consecutive Sunday and were looking for their first win over an AFC West rival this season as they took on the struggling Oakland Raiders. Anthony Lynn’s club turned over the football seven times in last week’s 29-point setback to the Vikings. This week, the Bolts did not give up the ball but the defense also failed to come up with a takeaway. Philip Rivers threw for 279 yards without a score or interception. Melvin Gordon scored the team’s two touchdowns but Los Angeles ran for only 19 yards on 16 carries. And the Chargers surrendered 366 total yards in falling to 0-5 within the division this season.
Next Week: It’s been a dismal year for Lynn’s club but the Chargers could go out on a high note if they can win at Arrowhead Stadium for the second straight year. As for the last meeting with the Chiefs, the Bolts fell at “home” at Mexico City, 24-17, on a Monday night back in Week 11. The Chargers are 1-10 in their last 11 games in this rivalry.
Draft Talk: It will be interesting to see what this team looks like this spring. It’s a talented roster but Rivers, Gordon and tight end Hunter Henry are potential unrestricted free agents. The veteran quarterback is coming off a rough year as well. Could general manager Tom Telesco be thinking it’s time to draft a successor in the first round?
Recap: Doug Marrone’s club rallied in the fourth quarter last Sunday at Oakland and put an end to the club’s five-game losing streak. Now the Jaguars headed to Atlanta for the first time since 2011 to take on the feisty Falcons. The team found itself in a 14-0 hole less than six minutes into the game but the club did hang around to make things interesting. Running back Leonard Fournette 105 yards from scrimmage and rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew did throw a 42-yard touchdown pass to Chris Conley. And Jacksonville’s defense did pick off Matt Ryan twice. But Marrone’s squad only reached the end zone once and were outgained 518-288 in total yardage.
Next Week: The Jaguars look to continue their recent success at home against the rival Colts. Last year, Marrone’s team pitched a shutout at Jacksonville, 6-0, in Week 13. All told, the Jaguars have won the last four home games in this series dating back to 2015 – three at Jacksonville and one in London, England in 2016.
Draft Talk: The franchise opted to part ways with executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin last week. In terms of the draft, general manager David Caldwell now has a pair of first-round picks next April thanks to the deal that sent cornerback Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams. The needs for this club are quite a few.
