Since the College Football Playoff was born, 24 teams have earned the right to play for the National Championship and we’re ranking all of them.

The 2014 college football season marked one of the biggest changes in the history of the sport. Following the conclusion of the regular season, the race for the National Championship was no longer down to just the two top-ranked teams in the country. Instead, the 2015 College Football Playoff marked the first instance of the four-team postseason to determine the champion.

With the LSU Tigers, Ohio State Buckeyes, Clemson Tigers and Oklahoma Sooners — in order — now set to compete in the 2019-20 College Football Playoff, there have been 24 teams that have earned the right to play for the title. Of course, only five teams have actually taken home the natty and a sixth will be crowned this year.

Beyond just those that won the National Championship and the teams that fell or will fall short though, not all of the teams to have earned a berth in the College Football Playoff are created equal. While others were on par with eventual title-winners and could’ve been crowned champions had just a few things gone differently, others never truly had a chance.

As we’re set to begin the sixth installment of the College Football Playoff, it feels like an apt time to look back at the 24 teams that have ended the regular season as one of the four best in the country and see how they stack up against one another. So that’s what we’re set to do, looking back and ranking every College Football Playoff team in history.

Yes, that means we’re including the four teams that will be vying for the National Championship in the 2019-20 CFP. Though those games have not been played yet, we’ll be projecting their overall quality based on what we’ve seen from them to this point.

In descending order, let’s go No. 24-1 in ranking every College Football Playoff team up to this point.
