20. Oklahoma Sooners – 2016

Lost to Clemson in Semifinal (Orange Bowl), 37-17

As mentioned when talking about this year’s Oklahoma Sooners, previous iterations of the team that have reached the CFP have simply not been able to keep up defensively. To this point though, their most disappointing effort came in the 2015-16 iteration of the Playoff as the Sooners were handled on both sides of the ball by Clemson.

Baker Mayfield and the Sooners offense-first managed only 17 points against an elite defense, which was the first part of the disappointing equation. The one positive was that OU limited Deshaun Watson in the passing game as he failed to top 200 yards and had one touchdown and a pick. But Watson and Wayne Gallman ran all over Oklahoma for 295 yards and three touchdowns. It was the worst-case scenario for the Sooners as they allowed Clemson to control every bit of the action.

19. Florida State Seminoles – 2015

Lost to Oregon in Semifinal (Rose Bowl), 59-20

The Florida State Seminoles that made their lone appearance in the 2014-15 Playoff are probably the most difficult team to rank against the rest. On one hand, they were a team that clearly had the talent to compete with anyone else in the country. On the other, they lost by 39 points to Oregon in the Rose Bowl. So where do we land with the Seminoles?

In that game, Jameis Winston, Dalvin Cook and Karlos Williams were able to find plenty of success with 348 passing yards for Winston and 183 combined rushing yards from the two running backs. However, the defense fell apart completely in the second half, allowing the Ducks to run away with the game.

Because of that defensive collapse and the eventual rout the game resulted in, you can only put Florida State but so high. Even still, they were a solid semifinal loser that was more competitive than the final score indicates.
