NCAA Football FanDuel Single Game Contest: Orange Bowl picks
By Hans Geevers
The Orange Bowl presents the DFS/FanDuel community with a clash of two top 25 teams! Let’s take a look at this game from a fantasy football perspective.
Before I discuss my fantasy football player selections for the Orange Bowl let’s review the rules for the FanDuel single game contest.
The rules for the single game contest are rather simple. You have $60,000 to utilize on five players from either team. However, one of those players will be designated as your lineup’s MVP. The MVP accumulates 1.5 times the standard FanDuel points value.
The remaining four players in your lineup will receive the standard FanDuel points value. Having stated that, it is highly important that you select the correct player for your MVP position if you hope to take down a single game contest.
If you have additional questions regarding the single game contest I recommend that you check out the FanDuel website for more details.
Now let’s transition to what I love doing the most! Here are my FanDuel player selections for the Orange Bowl.
MVP-Kyle Trask $15,000
Florida quarterback Kyle Trask has played outstanding since taking over the starting job from Feleipe Franks earlier this season. I think it is fair to say that Trask’s quality play at the quarterback position is the primary reason that the Gators arrive at the Orange Bowl as big favorites to beat Virginia. More specifically, as of this writing, the Action Network notes that the Gators are 14 point favorites.
For me, Trask is the clear choice to be my MVP in the FanDuel single game contest. Why do I have such a strong opinion regarding going with Trask as the MVP? Well, let me explain in detail why I feel that way.
Let’s take a look at Kyle Trask’s recent statistical data to shed light on why I am rolling with Trask as my MVP. In Trask’s last four games (all as the starting quarterback), Trask has 1,130 passing yards and 12 passing touchdowns. Additionally, in that same four game span, Trask has averaged 24.33 FanDuel points a game.
Now that we have established Trask’s recent quality of play on the football field let’s take a look at the Gators opponent in the Orange Bowl. The University of Virginia has had issues defending the pass this season. Virginia’s defense is currently ranked 67th in the nation in average passing yards allowed per game (228.2).
Virginia’s vulnerability defending the pass will clearly be a problem facing this Florida Gators team. The University of Florida currently ranks 16th in the FBS in average offensive passing yards a game (300.4). Having stated that, I think the facts clearly indicate that going with Trask as the MVP of my lineup is the smart play.
Flex Plays
Bryce Perkins $15,500
Bryce Perkins is not your typical quarterback. Perkins certainly has done a nice job throwing the football this season. However, what makes him different from most quarterbacks is his ability to run. A good example of Perkins ability to gain yards running the ball can be seen in Virginia’s game versus Virginia Tech in November. Perkins had 164 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the Cavaliers game against Virginia Tech.
It should be noted that Perkins has shown he has the ability to score a high number of fantasy points as well. In Virginia’s last five games, Perkins is averaging 34.49 FanDuel points a game!
Van Jefferson $11,000
I am stacking my FanDuel MVP with one of his most reliable receivers, Florida wide receiver Van Jefferson. In the Gators last two games, Jefferson has 11 receptions, 130 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Kyle Pitts $10,000
Florida tight end Kyle Pitts has become one of Kyle Trask’s favorite targets. Let’s take a look at Pitts recent statistical data. In the Gators last four games, Pitts has 16 receptions and 219 receiving yards. In that same four game span, Pitts has averaged 8.98 FanDuel points a game.
Terrell Jana $8,500
For my last flex play, I am rolling with Virginia wide receiver Terrell Jana. I see a game script that has Virginia behind the majority of this football game. If my opinion is accurate, Virginia will be forced to throw the football early and often.
Additionally, I like the fact that Jana has shown the ability to perform at a high level. Earlier this season, Jana had nine receptions and 108 receiving yards in Virginia’s 33-28 win versus Georgia Tech.
As always, good luck!
