Golden State Warriors: Play it safe

Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson could probably both return this season, and yeah, we’re sure they’re itching to get back on the floor to help out poor Draymond Green and an injury-battered D’Angelo Russell. But the Golden State Warriors‘ inspiration for this season became the 1996 San Antonio Spurs the moment Curry went down, and that should continue to be the case even as they approach their returns to action.

One might look at the standings and notice that despite their 9-25 start, the Dubs are still only 5.5 games out of the eighth playoff spot in the West. However, plenty of teams in that 7-11 range have been heating up lately, and even with Curry and Thompson back, it’d take one hell of a tear to get back in playoff range.

The Warriors are better off chalking it up to a lost season and adding a high-impact rookie to their ranks in the NBA Draft, giving Curry and Thompson all the time in the world to recuperate rather than rush them back. Then, next year, the comeback tour will be on with the Splash Brothers, Russell, Green, Eric Paschall and their new rookie leading the charge.
