Dallas Mavericks: Don’t do anything foolish
The impulse to make a win-now move is obvious. Luka Doncic is playing at an MVP level in just his second season and the Dallas Mavericks are sporting the most dominant offense in NBA history despite their second-best player on that end being…a rusty Kristaps Porzingis? The erratic Tim Hardaway Jr.? A rotating carousel of whoever’s having a good game on any given night?
The Mavs are 21-11 despite an obvious lack of star power behind Doncic, and with the Western Conference so wide open, it’s temping to target a high-profile, short-term upgrade in order to really make some noise.
Doing so would be shortsighted, however. Doncic looks ready to contend now, but he’s still only 20 years old and Porzingis is only 24. This team should be in no rush to make a blockbuster move this season, so holding onto draft picks and young players in order to build a long-term contender should be the focus. Marginally improving the roster and dumping Courtney Lee would be one thing, but going all in this early would reek of unnecessary desperation.
