Over the last several decades, boxing’s popularity has wanned. The sport has attempted a comeback in recent years, and 2019 was an eventful year in boxing’s regeneration.
Most major networks carried boxing coverage in some capacity. The principal players in boxing broadcasting such as DAZN, PBC on FOX, and ESPN flourished even as they competed to one-up each other.
The competition from rival companies served to increase the want for competitive matchmaking. However, it also decreased the ability for competing networks to join forces in putting together the most lucrative bouts.
Fans desire to see the best contests, and their calls have gone unheeded for too long. With 2019 coming to a close, there’s hope that cross-banner cooperation is a possibility. The news of the joint effort between ESPN and FOX to bring the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury rematch in February stokes those hopes.
Still, 2019 was memorable and, at times, infamous and too often tragic. It embodied the good, the bad, and the ugly in the sport, but we are taking the time to reminisce on the positive.
Boxing’s heavyweight division is more active and competitive than it has been in a long time. Canelo Alvarez has become the face of the sport, and every division is teeming with talent. Don’t be surprised if 2020 is a remarkable year in boxing. If that’s the case, then 2019 will have served as the penultimate.
