Fantasy football: Austin Ekeler could carry Chargers

Now with the 2019 regular season in the books, it’s time to shift our focus on to the most intense part of the year which is the post-season. But before we indulge in the January playoff festivities it’s important to also devote some time to what the future may hold for 2020. Some pretty big breakout candidates had burst onto the scene this year that played an integral role in several Fantasy teams’ success. One name that comes to mind is Austin Ekeler of the Los Angeles Chargers.

Ekeler entered the league in 2017 after spending his college days at Western Colorado University. Following the 2017 draft, he was signed by the Chargers as an undrafted free agent to a three-year $1.66 million deal which also includes a $5,000 signing bonus.

At the time, the Chargers were getting ready to play their first season in Los Angeles after moving from San Diego in the offseason. It was an exciting time for the team as they were looking to showcase their talented backfield with Melvin Gordon leading the charge and Ekeler providing some necessary depth.

Gordon was to be the workhorse back while Ekeler would be the change of pace member and provide more of a catch-passer-presence for Philip Rivers as a way of throwing defensive coordinators off balance. Even though he was an undrafted rookie, Ekeler did possess a ton of promising talent for the Chargers’ run game.
