Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture

Pick: Al Pacino, The Irishman

There is no denying that Al Pacino is a force to be reckoned in the world of cinema, and one performance that truly personifies that sentiment is his exceptional take on one Jimmy Hoffa. Pacino’s stunning turn in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman absolutely puts him way ahead of the competition in the Best Supporting Actor category.

Whether he is starring opposite Robert De Niro like in Heat or TheĀ Godfather Part II, Pacino straight kills it when he works with the ā€œtaxi driver.ā€ While De Niro’s Frank Sheeran is the main focus of the Netflix feature, Pacino’s Hoffa steals the show every time he is on screen up until that final moment. Even when Pacino’s getting whacked, he makes sure to do so like a boss. Forget about anyone else taking this one from Pacino.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy

Pick: Daniel Craig, Knives Out

It seems like Daniel Craig has been playing James Bond forever, so much so it’s somewhat tricky at times to think of him playing a role that doesn’t involve him doing parkour over rooftops or shooting up an evil villain’s base. While he has had a few other notable roles, the shadow of being 007 has led many to underestimate him. Thankfully, his performance in Knives Out will silence anyone who doubts his skill set and proves he is much more than the suave guy who likes his martinis shaken, not stirred.

Knives Out has a pretty stacked list of A-listers on its cast, making it difficult, one would think, to stand out when there is so much talent on screen. But Craig does a great job of stealing the spotlight every time he enters the frame and does an impeccable job playing the private detective Benoit Blanc. His fun southern accent and inquisitive demeanor help in eclipsing his Bond persona.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

Pick: Joaquin Phoenix, Joker

Of all the villains Batman has faced over the years, none have achieved such prowess as the Joker. The character has appeared so many times in several forms of media that it would seem like an impossible task to stand out, let alone be considered a favorite over seasoned veterans in the industry, right? Joaquin Phoenix proves it’s possible to play the Joker as well as bring something so unique to the table. His take has been positively revered by both fans and critics to the point of becoming a serious awards contender.

Phoenix has proven time and time again that he is one of the best in the game and has a range unlike most. His memorable take on Arthur Fleck is as chilling as it is exhilarating to watch. His stellar take on tragedy and illusion are what truly put him several rungs over the competition.
