How to handle David Johnson, Kenyan Drake in dynasty league
By John Buhler
Let’s say you have both David Johnson and Kenyan Drake of the Arizona Cardinals in a fantasy dynasty league. How do you tackle that impending issue?
If you play in a fantasy football dynasty league, odds are you have multiple players at the same position from a given team for handcuffing purposes. This usually works out very well for that savvy fantasy football player, but what happens when a handcuff’s future looks murky at best? What are the Arizona Cardinals going to do with running backs David Johnson and Kenyan Drake?
The Fantasy Footballers tackle this very dilemma on Wednesday’s AMA episode. Since the guys all hail from Arizona, they probably know better than most about all things Cardinals. Jason Moore says you should hold onto Johnson because you’re not going to be getting any significant fantasy value for him in a trade. If you drop him, this could be an issue, as someone else will pick him up.

The reason this could be problematic is Johnson is as good as gone in Arizona. He’s not expected to be back with the team in 2020, so perhaps a change of scenery will get him back to playing at a Pro Bowl-level as he did a few years ago. If he goes to a team where he is a featured back again, then we may very well see a resurgence in Johnson’s play next season.
As for Drake, you would be foolish to not keep him on your team. He had a tremendous 2019 NFL season and will be a featured back wherever he ends up playing, whether that be with the Cardinals or if he signs elsewhere. Arizona wants him back, as the Cardinals traded for him mid-season last year. But if he commands too much on the open market, Arizona is not going to match.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as overpaying a guy usually means a team will end up using the newly acquired offensive weapon to hopefully get its money’s worth. Should Drake fade at some point next year, you can move off him in a dynasty league if you’re trying to short his new contract.
Ultimately, you’re going to want to stand pat on both Johnson and Drake in dynasty leagues for the time being. The best thing that can happen for you is Drake returns on a reasonable contract as the Arizona starter and Johnson goes to a team in need of a bell-cow and he returns to Pro Bowl-form.
