Tina Fey, Amy Poehler hosting 2021 Golden Globes spares viewers from more Ricky Gervais
NBC announced that popular hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will be back for a fourth hosting gig at next year’s Golden Globes.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return for the fourth time to host the Golden Globes in 2021. The announcement—made by NBC Chairman Paul Telegdy was made public a year early, probably to die down the controversy from Ricky Gervais’s polarizing stint as host.
Although a safer bet, the two funny ladies were a lot of fun to watch the last time, and have always been on our list of favorite hosts. Their return is also likely not to ruffle any feathers. Remember this classic burn on George Clooney? This is the kind of stuff we can look forward to.
Golden Globe winners and nominees themselves, Fey and Poehler hosted the awards show 2013-2015 and opened the ceremony in 2015 by claiming it would be their last, opening, “And welcome, you bunch of despicable, spoiled, minimally talented brats.” All tongue-in-cheek of course. The duo’s opening in 2013, 2014 and 2015 are still as funny today as they were then.
Two NBC alums who began at the network on Saturday Night Live where they were paired on Weekend Update. Later, each had their own long-running sitcoms on the network with Fey’s 30 Rock and Poehler’s Parks and Recreation.
Poehler and Fey clearly enjoy working together and have fantastic comedic timing with each other.
“There’s no denying that Tina and Amy’s comedic chemistry is infectious,” said Lorenzo Soria, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) via Deadline. “We can’t wait to see the dynamic duo return to the Golden Globes stage.”
It’s not the first time NBC has brought in the duo after a Gervais hosting gig that irritated the Hollywood crowd. Here’s Poehler’s and Fey’s hilarious monologue in 2013, including another favorite joke about Meryl Streep who had the flu that night (“I heard she’s amazing in it”).
“Tina and Amy have provided Golden Globes viewers with some of the most memorable moments the show has ever seen,” said Amy Thurlow, President of Dick Clark productions, according to Deadline. “We’re thrilled to welcome them back in 2021.”
Fey won Golden Globes two years in a row for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, for one of the best comedies on TV, 30 Rock (2008-2009), and was nominated the next four years. Amy Poehler won the same category in 2014, for Parks and Recreation, after being nominated for the role the previous two years.
No date has been set for the 2021 Golden Globe Awards.
Unlike the Academy Awards which will go host-less for the second straight year, a disappointing decision because hosts always make it more fun, the Golden Globes guaranteed the 2021 show will be full of laughs with Fey and Poehler hosting.
