2020 NFL mock draft: Chargers lock onto Justin Herbert
By Brad Weiss
The New York Jets were one of the hottest teams in football to close out the 2019 NFL season, as they reeled off six wins in their last eight games. Having a healthy Sam Darnold under center certainly helped, as he went down with mono after Week 1, and the team really struggled without him at quarterback.
Heading into 2020, there is sure to be wholesale changes on this roster, as the team could part ways with two of their best playmakers in Le’Veon Bell and Robby Anderson. No matter who they have at the skill positions next season, the fact is that Darnold needs more protection, and he could get a good piece to that puzzle in the person of Tristan Wirfs via the 2020 NFL Draft.
Wirfs is one of the best pure tackles in this draft class, and along this Jets offensive line, he would be a Day 1 starter on either the right, or left side. Protecting Darnold has to be priority No. 1 for this franchise moving forward, and if they can get him more protection in 2020, we have seen the kind of quarterback he can be.
The Las Vegas Raiders will hold multiple first round picks for the second straight year, as they continue to reap the rewards from trading away a generational talent in Khalil Mack. With their first of two first rounders, they have to address the wide receiver position, and they do so by bringing in CeeDee Lamb from Oklahoma.
Many believe that Lamb may actually be the best wide receiver in this draft class, and he has already shown his love for Raider Nation, after rocking a Fred Biletnikoff jersey after a Sooners victory this season. Quarterback Derek Carr had one of his best statistical seasons without a true WR1 in 2019, and Lamb could help fill that void in the team’s first season in Sin City.
The Raiders actually did not get eliminated from playoff contention until Week 17, as general manager Mike Mayock did a great job building through the draft in 2019. If he can hit on two more first rounders in 2020, the organization will be in good shape moving forward, which is good considering they are moving into their new $2 billion stadium.
