Chris Godwin had a WR2 season, but is really a WR8 player

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin had a remarkable 2019 season in fantasy football, but it’s not wise for you to overdraft him next season.

Even though they finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the 12th straight season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were one of the most interesting watches this year, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Jameis Winston threw for over 5,000 yards and 30 touchdowns, as well as 30 interceptions, with many of those passes going to wide receiver Chris Godwin.

Godwin had 86 catches for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns in his third season out of Penn State. He made his first trip to the Pro Bowl, but even more impressive, he finished the 2019 fantasy football season as WR2 behind only All-Pro wideout Michael Thomas of the division-rival New Orleans Saints. Godwin had a tremendous year, but let’s not get ahead ourselves here.

The Fantasy Footballers were impressed by Godwin’s season in the Tampa Bay offense. Finishing as WR2 cannot be denied. However, had we combined the last two fantasy seasons for wide receivers, Godwin would have finished as WR10. In short, there is a decent chance Godwin will be slightly overrated heading into the next fantasy football season, but not grossly.

The guys view Godwin in the range of a WR8, meaning he’s good enough to be your No. 1 wide receiver on your fantasy team, but won’t be one of the very best wideouts in fantasy football again next year. Frankly, he’s the second-best wide receiver on his own NFL team, as we all know how much of a pass-catching beast Mike Evans.

Reasons for Godwin’s inflated WR2 status for 2019 are touchdowns being down across the board for fantasy wide receivers, coming off 2018 where touchdowns were up. There were also injuries to key players like Adam Thielen of the Minnesota Vikings who might have skewed things. Other players like Julio Jones and DeAndre Hopkins should come off the board before Godwin.

Ultimately, you have to like drafting any Tampa Bay receiving option next year, regardless of if Winston is the quarterback. If he is again, that’s great. If not, it’s the end of the world because this passing attack looks to remain high-octane with Bruce Arians calling the shots with this Tampa Bay option. Godwin will be great again, but not a WR2-type player next season.
