4. Hensley Meulens

Alongside Perez, Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY has pointed to Meulens as a top candidate for the Mets’ managerial post now.

Muelens played professionally from 1989-2000, in MLB and Japan primarily. He started coaching in the minors, and then worked as hitting coach for Bruce Bochy with the San Francisco Giants from 2010-2019. With Bochy leaving the Giants’ dugout after last season, Meulens was named Mets’ bench coach under Beltran in December.

Meulens has gotten some mention for managerial openings over time, most notably interviewing with the New York Yankees when they were looking to replace Joe Girardi. So he’s in line for an opportunity to manage at some point, it’s really only a matter of when it happens.

Meulens is an easy and convenient pivot for the Mets in their search for a new manager, since he is/was already in place on Beltran’s coaching staff. But if it’s a notable name the Wilpons want most, he may only get a cursory interview.
