Former Houston Cougars quarterback D’Eriq King has found a new home. He will play his last season of college football for Manny Diaz’s Miami Hurricanes.

Miami football just landed the biggest free agent on the market

After four years with the Houston Cougars, quarterback D’Eriq King has decided to take his talents to South Beach, or Coral Gables if we’re going to be exact about it.

King tweeted out on Monday afternoon his plans to transfer to the Miami Hurricanes to play for Manny Diaz in 2020.

King infamously opted to sit out the last two-thirds of his true senior season with Houston. After four games playing for first-year head coach Dana Holgorsen, King decided it was in his best interest to save his remaining eligibility heading into 2020. King had played in 34 games with Houston from 2016 to 2019 but looks to write one final college chapter in the ACC, not the AAC.

He now goes to play for a Miami team that is desperate for an offensive identity. That’s not to say the Canes are a bad team by any means, but they have been a far cry from either peak The U has ever achieved. With a winnable ACC Coastal on the horizon, look for King to be a reason Miami vies for its first division title since 2017. That feels like eons ago with where the program is at now.

In four years with Houston, King completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 4,925 yards, 50 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He averaged 8.2 yards per passing attempt and had a passing efficiency rating of 155.4 during his time with the Cougars football program. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound quarterback also had 253 carries for 1,421 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.

Though probably not much of a pro prospect at the quarterback position, having an opportunity to start for a team in a Power 5 conference is something King probably couldn’t pass up. If the Canes have a strong 2020 campaign, King will be a big reason for that. His dual-threat playmaking abilities, as well as his underrated pass-catching talents, make him an excellent offensive weapon.

Ultimately, Miami should be very excited to get one of the bigger marquee transfer quarterbacks in this offseason cycle. Landing King may not be as celebrated as the Georgia Bulldogs signing former Wake Forest Demon Deacons quarterback Jamie Newman, but this is a move that makes the Hurricanes all the more competitive heading into next football season.

Great move for Miami who could be the team to beat in the ACC Coastal.
