Miami Dolphins free agency 2020: Top 5 targets
By John Buhler
A big key this offseason for the Dolphins is to shore up its offensive line. Eventually, they are going to have a franchise quarterback they’ll want to keep upright and keep clean in the pocket. One player the Dolphins should swing for the fences this offseason and attempt to sign is Tennessee Titans right tackle Jack Conklin.
Conklin was the former No. 8 overall pick out of Michigan State University in the 2016 draft. For whatever reason, Tennessee decided against picking up his fifth-year option for the 2020 season, meaning he’ll be an unrestricted free agency this spring. Given that he was a First-Team All-Pro as a rookie in 2016, that comes as a bit of a shock. However, that is the reality for them.
Odds are, the Titans will want to bring him back on a new deal since the team played so well in the trenches down the stretch in their run to the AFC Championship game. Tennessee really came alive along the offensive line once left tackle Taylor Lewan returned from his four-game suspension. Tennessee has roughly $57 million in available cap space to help bring Conklin back.
Is Conklin a candidate for the franchise tag? On some teams, maybe, but not Tennessee. Keep in mind that quarterback Ryan Tannehill is a free agent this offseason, as is superstar running back Derrick Henry. Tennessee has some money to work with, but it will be challenging for general manager Jon Robinson to bring back nearly all of this 2019 corps. Miami can play spoiler here.
