NBA Trade Deadline 2020: 10 players who could use a change of scenery
4. Thaddeus Young
As we covered in our list of buried veterans who can help a contender, Thaddeus Young is wasting away on a sorely disappointing Chicago Bulls team that was expected to contend for a playoff spot in the East. They’re technically only 3.5 games out of the 8-seed, but at 16-29, this hardly feels like a legitimate playoff squad.
With Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. looking like frontcourt fixtures in Chicago for years to come, Young’s minutes are always going to be restricted. Adding respectable veterans to the roster made sense on paper for a young, aspiring playoff team, but Young is unhappy with how he’s being deployed by head coach Jim Boylen, and it’s hard to blame him.
Young’s numbers are down to 9.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 22.4 minutes per game — his lowest figures across the board since his rookie year back in 2007-08. He’s only shooting 41.8 percent from the field and 34.7 percent from 3, but this is a classic case of “veteran needs rescuing from dysfunctional team.” Someone rescue poor Thad, please.
