The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will square off in Super Bowl LIV. Here are the betting odds and more for the “Big Game” in South Florida.

The last time the Kansas City Chiefs appeared in the Super Bowl, the franchise was led by a slew of Pro Football Hall of Famers, including miked-up head coach (for NFL Films) Hank Stram and quarterback Len Dawson. That game was at New Orleans and outside at Tulane Stadium.

Of course, the San Francisco 49ers made a more recent trip to this championship round. Just seven years ago, it was Jim Harbaugh’s club that took in on the chin in XLVII. The 34-31 setback to his brother’s Baltimore Ravens also took place in the Big Easy – indoors at the Superdome.

So who wins this intriguing game and by how much? That’s the point here and as we know, there will be more than a few bucks wagered when it comes to this much-anticipated contest.

According to Chris Raybon of Action Network (subscription required), the Chiefs opened as a 1.5 favorite to capture only their second Super Bowl title and first since dismissing the Minnesota Vikings back in 1969.

While Kansas City is looking for only its second Lombardi Trophy, the Niners would tie both the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots for the most Super Bowl wins ever (6).

Still, the Chiefs (12-4) are the favorite to defeat Kyle Shanahan’s club this despite the fact that the 49ers (13-3) finished with a better regular-season record than the AFC champions. Of course, Reid’s club is currently riding an eight-game overall winning streak – including come-from-behind playoff wins over the Houston Texans and the Tennessee Titans.

Is there something to be said for momentum?

When it comes to history, the 49ers have certainly made their share in this setting. The franchise edged the Cincinnati Bengals twice on Super Sunday in XVI (26-21) and XXIII (20-16). There was also the aforementioned loss to the Ravens seven years ago. Of course, the club also came up with three lopsided wins in this game in conquering the Miami Dolphins in XIX (38-16), the Denver Broncos in XXIV (55-10) and the then-San Diego Chargers in XXIX (49-26).

In six Super Bowl appearances, the Niners have never scored fewer points in any of those contests. And this will be San Francisco’s third Super Sunday appearance in a venue currently dubbed Hard Rock Stadium.

As for the Chiefs, there was Super Bowl I, a 35-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and Super Bowl IV, the previously-mentioned 23-7 win over the Vikings.

Of course, there’s a matter of the over/under for those who enjoy that aspect of wagering. It currently stands at a healthy 53.5 and that makes perfect sense considering the 49ers (479) and Chiefs (451) averaged over 28 points per game. San Francisco added a combined 64 points in their playoff wins over the Vikings and Packers and that was topped by Reid’s team rolling up 86 points in besting Houston and Tennessee.

Of course a year ago, the over/under for the Patriots/Rams match-up (LIII) was 57.5 and a 13-3 New England win wound up being the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever. Food for thought?
