This week, the PGA Tour travels to Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open! Let’s take a look at this event from a fantasy golf perspective and find the best FanDuel player selections in the field!

Before we dive into my FanDuel player selections for this tournament let’s take a look at the course the field will play, review some key facts regarding this event and look at the key statistics that I think are most important to a golfer’s success at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open will be played at TPC Scottsdale. The golf course is a par 71 that measures 7,266 yards. This track features undulating Bermuda grass fairways and relatively average size Bermuda grass greens. Bunkers guard the majority of greens. This course also features a par four (17th hole) that is reachable for the long hitters in the field. Additionally, this track has three par five holes that are reachable as well.

Key Facts

This event has been played at TPC Scottsdale every year since 1987.

TPC Scottsdale is approximately 1,530 feet above sea level.

Eight of the last nine winners of the Waste Management Phoenix Open had a top five finish in one of that player’s previous five tournaments leading up to this event.

Upon reviewing the statistics of previous winners of this event it was evident to me that total driving is highly important to success at TPC Scottsdale. To illustrate that point, the last five winners of the Waste Management Phoenix Open were on average third in GIR (greens in regulation) and second in strokes gained tee to green in relation to the field the week that golfer won the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

The key statistics that I will be focusing on this week are GIR (greens in regulation), strokes gained to green, strokes gained approach, driving accuracy and driving distance.

Now let’s shift our focus to what I love doing the most! Here are my FanDuel player selections for the Waste Management Phoenix Open!

Jon Rahm $12,100

If you are looking for a golfer that arrives at this week’s PGA Tour event in very good form and has outstanding previous course history at the Waste Management Phoenix Open I think I have found your man. That man’s name is Jon Rahm.

Let’s first take a look at some of Jon Rahm’s outstanding recent results. He finished third at The Barclays in August, second at the BMW PGA Championship  in September, won the Open de Espana in October, won the DP World Tour Championship in November, finished second at the Hero World Challenge in December, finished tenth at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January, and finally he finished second at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Now let’s review Rahm’s previous course history at this week’s event. The 25 year old Spaniard has played outstanding at the Waste Management Phoenix Open every time that he has competed at this tournament. More specifically, Rahm has played this event four times. In those four previous events played at the Waste Management Phoenix Open Rahm has four top 16 finishes, including a tenth place result at last year’s event.

Yes, I know that Rahm arrives on the slate at a FanDuel price of $12,100. That is fine with me. I think he is worth every penny.

Webb Simpson 11,700

Simpson has played the Waste Management Phoenix Open seven times since 2011. In those seven events played, Webb has an impressive six top 20 finishes, including a runner up finish in 2017. He also finished third at the Sony Open earlier this month.

Bubba Watson $10,600

He finished fourth at the 2019 Waste Management Phoenix Open. He currently ranks 16th in strokes gained off the tee and 17th in strokes gained putting on the PGA Tour. Bubba also finished sixth at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Tom Hoge $9,000

Hoge arrives at this week’s event on the heels of three consecutive top 12 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a fifth place result at last week’s Farmers Insurance Open.

Charley Hoffman $8,900

Hoffman fired a bogey free 65 in the final round of last week’s Farmers Insurance Open en route to a ninth place. He has made the cut in his last six starts at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, including a 20th place result in last year’s event.

Doc Redman $7,500

He has two top 29 finishes in his last four events on the PGA Tour. Redman currently ranks 20th in strokes gained off the tee and 26th in strokes gained approach on the PGA Tour. In my opinion, Redman is an outstanding play at a FanDuel price of only $7,500.
