NBA Trade Deadline 2020: The 30-team mega-deal that solves nothing and makes everyone mad
By Ian Levy
Memphis Grizzlies
Sending out: Andre Iguodala (MIA), Jae Crowder (DEN), Jonas Valanciunas (SAS)
Bringing in: Malik Beasley (DEN), Gorgui Dieng (MIN), Danilo Gallinari (OKC)
The Grizzlies have progressed rapidly, surging to the point where they are now a viable playoff contender in the Western Conference. They’ve been led there by their young core — Ja Morant, De’Anthony Melton, Dillon Brooks, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke, all of whom are under the age of 24. One of the things that has worked so well this year has been the veterans scaffolding the development of that young group.
Here, the Grizzlies are able to add another young talent while simultaneously preserving a veteran infrastructure that can make things easy on their young players and potentially even help them secure that playoff spot. Beasley is the prize here, a young guard who broke out last year in Denver and has struggled to find his footing in their rotation this year. They have a chance to try him out this year and decide if they’d like to pay him in restricted free agency, and his shooting, athleticism and defensive potential should make him a nice fit.
Dieng has one more year on his contract and Gallinari is an expiring contract so they’re not handcuffing themselves financially. Both players can contribute this year, especially Gallinari with his shooting, and help keep the train rolling.
