NBA Trade Deadline 2020: The 30-team mega-deal that solves nothing and makes everyone mad
By Ian Levy
Minnesota Timberwolves
Sending out: Robert Covington (LAL), Gorgui Dieng (MEM), Jake Layman (MIL), Noah Vonleh (LAC)
Bringing in: Justise Winslow (MIA), Isaac Bonga (WAS), Kris Dunn (CHI), Tristan Thompson (CLE)
Things have gone completely off the rails for the Minnesota Timberwolves — from starting the season with impressive defense and an Andrew Wiggins evolution to the same old disastrous defense, historic losses, the second-worst record in the Western Conference and a star big man who has to be at least thinking about an exit. The Timberwolves have to be thinking about bold changes and while there is certainly room to be bolder this offseason, this move might help change the mood in the locker room at least.
The Timberwolves are flipping key role player Robert Covington and some other pieces who aren’t likely to contribute on a hypothetically elite future iteration of this team. In exchange the pick up Justise Winslow who broke out as a full-time point guard with the Heat last season and has been rendered at least somewhat irrelevant by their strong play while he’s been out with injury. Next year, the Timberwolves could start Winslow and Jarrett Culver in the backcourt next to Wiggins, injecting defense and playmaking into a lineup that could use both. Find a defensive-minded 4 who can round out that group and this could be a totally different team next season.
