Houston Texans free agency 2020: Top 5 targets
By John Buhler
Of the three big-name free agents hitting the market this spring on the Dallas Cowboys’ side of things, the least likely to return to Dallas has to be cornerback Byron Jones. This is because the Cowboys are expected to bring back both quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Amari Cooper on new deals. Prescott is the top priority and one would think Cooper returns as well.
As for Jones, he may not be heading back to the Cowboys. Though the Cowboys have the fifth-most money up against the 2020 salary cap at $77.9 million, it will be incredibly tough to bring back all three on new deals, not to mention the Cowboys losing a ton of quality role players in free agency as well, including veteran inside linebacker Sean Lee.
Should the Cowboys be able to come to long-term, team-friendly deals with Cooper and Prescott, perhaps they could use the franchise tag on Jones to bring him back for one more year. However, that would cost the Cowboys roughly $16.5 million for a good, but not great cornerback. One would think the Cowboys would stretch their dollars a little further than just on three players.
And this is where the Texans come in and steal away a great player for the Cowboys. Houston has a top-10 salary cap situation and may want to upgrade over the savvy veteran that is Johnathan Joseph. In a way, landing Jones could act as a means of letting A.J. Bouye walk to the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency back in 2017. Jones makes the Texans defense infinitely better.
