Super Bowl 54: 10 likeliest players to win MVP
9. 49ers Defensive End Nick Bosa
Sticking with the pass rushing theme, the 49ers have a lethal defensive end of their own in rookie sensation Nick Bosa. The former Ohio State product, who was picked second in the 2019 NFL Draft, has set the league on fire in his first year as a pro.
During the regular season, Bosa torched opposing offensive tackles for nine sacks, and he picked up the pace in the playoffs with three more takedowns. Bosa was a menace in the Divisional Round, recording six tackles and two sacks against the Minnesota Vikings.
The last defender to win the Super Bowl MVP award was Von Miller, who lifted the Pete Rozelle trophy in Super Bowl 50. Miller harassed Cam Newton in that game, recording 2.5 sacks and coming up with a huge forced fumble late in the game to seal the victory for the Denver Broncos.
That is the kind of defensive effort it usually takes to win the Super Bowl MVP, and it is one that Bosa is certainly capable of duplicating. The Chiefs won’t be able to key on any one edge rusher for the 49ers, who can also send Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, and former Chief Dee Ford after Patrick Mahomes.
Those are all capable rushers, but Nick Bosa has shown that he has the chance to be a truly special player. It is wise to consider special players for the Super Bowl MVP, so Bosa has as good a chance as any defender playing in this game.
