8. Chiefs Running Back Damien Williams

While quarterbacks take home the lions share of Super Bowl MVPs, the running backs have actually gone a long time without winning one. The last back to take home Super Bowl MVP honors was Terrell Davis, who won it back in 1998 for the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXXII.

The running back is always a threat to take home the honors with a massive game, controlling the clock with game breaking runs. A home run shot also would aid the running back’s cause, and that is something that Chiefs’ running back Damien Williams can provide.

Williams’ overall numbers weren’t great in the regular season as he missed five games due to injury, but he has come into his own after seizing the backfield following Kareem Hunt’s release last year. The Chiefs do have LeSean McCoy and Darwin Thompson in the backfield as well, but the playoffs have been all Williams.

The big play potential is enormous for Williams, who ripped off a 91-yard touchdown run earlier in the season. If Williams was able to duplicate that feat in the Super Bowl, he’d have a tremendous chance to win the MVP award with a rushing total pretty much guaranteed to be well over 100 yards.

The thing that will hurt Williams’ chances is that the Chiefs run through Patrick Mahomes, but maybe Andy Reid will throw a curveball and look for a more balanced attack to keep the 49ers off balance. If that’s the case, Williams’ odds skyrocket.
