6. Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce

Aside from offensive linemen and kickers, no position has had a longer drought for the Super Bowl MVP award than the tight end. Quick, name the last tight end to win the Super Bowl MVP.

If you’re blanking, don’t feel bad because no tight end has ever been the Super Bowl MVP. A lot of this is due to the nature of the position, which is filled with players who thrive on red zone work, and if those touchdowns get converted the award usually goes to the quarterback.

This year’s game features a pair of tight ends who could break that drought, including the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce. Unlike the traditional tight end, Kelce is a truly explosive playmaker who can line up all over the formation and impact the game in multiple ways.

Kelce has already had a monstrous game in the playoffs, catching 12 passes for 134 yards and three touchdowns against the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round. A lot of the credit for that performance would go to Patrick Mahomes, but Kelce has been one of the Chiefs’ best weapons all year long.

If almost all of Mahomes’ production goes to Kelce again, there is a shot he could steal the MVP award from his own quarterback. The odds aren’t great, but a historic performance could sway the voters away from Mahomes and towards Kelce.
