3. 49ers Running Back Raheem Mostert

If there was an MVP for the Conference Championship round, there is no question it would have gone to 49ers’ running back Raheem Mostert. The Green Bay Packers had absolutely no answer for Mostert, who had 29 carries for 220 yards and four touchdowns.

The fact that Mostert is even at the top of the 49ers’ depth chart is absolutely stunning given his history. Mostert was cut by five different teams before winding up in San Francisco, where he began the year fourth on the depth chart behind Jerick McKinnon, Tevin Coleman, and Matt Breida.

Injuries to guys ahead of him created opportunities for Mostert, and he has taken full advantage of them. Mostert has shown he has a game wrecking performance with him, and duplicating his NFC Championship effort would make him the front runner for the MVP honor.

The good news for Mostert is that the 49ers will look to continue feeding the ground game in the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense are absolutely terrifying, so any smart team would look to limit their possessions by controlling the clock.

That game flow would play right into the hands of Mostert, who figures to be the primary bell cow for the 49ers in this game. If San Francisco can control the tempo of the contest, the odds are high that Mostert would become the first running back to win the Super Bowl MVP since Terrell Davis in 1998.
