PGA Tour DFS golf: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am FanDuel picks
By Hans Geevers
This week, the PGA Tour presents the FanDuel/DFS community with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am! Let’s take a look at this event from a fantasy golf perspective!
Before I dive into my FanDuel player selections let’s take a look at this tournament’s unique format and review the key statistics that I think are vital to a golfer’s success at this week’s event.
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am is a tournament that is contested on three different golf courses over a four day period in California. Unlike most PGA Tour events which have a cut after two rounds, the cut will occur upon completion of the third round on Saturday afternoon. Once the cut has taken place after round three, the remaining 65 players and ties will compete in the final round on Sunday.
This week’s three golf courses are Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill and Monterrey Peninsula. The entire field of golfers will play each course once through Saturday. The final round on Sunday will be contested on the Pebble Beach course.
Of the three golf courses just noted, the Monterrey Peninsula track has historically yielded the lowest scores.
It should be noted that identifying golfers for your player pools that have had previous success at this week’s event appears to be a smart thing to do. Why? Well, every winner of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am since 2005 has had a top 21 finish at the event prior to that player’s win.
The key statistics that I will be focusing on this week are GIR (greens in regulation), putts per GIR, scrambling and strokes gained approach.
Here are my FanDuel player selections for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am!
Russell Knox $10,000
I could lead off my FanDuel selections with a relatively safe selection such as Dustin Johnson or a Jason Day. I certainly could not argue with someone who decided to go that direction. However, as I evaluated the relevant data for this week’s event it became apparent to me that Russell Knox would be my first FanDuel player selection.
Let’s take a look at Russell Knox’s results for this season to shed light on his outstanding and consistent play. Knox has made the cut in his last nine events on the PGA Tour. In those nine events, his worst finish was 48th. Additionally, in that same nine event span, Russell Knox has four top 21 finishes, including a 16th place result at last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Knox checks the box for me when it comes to key statistics. Knox currently ranks 21st in GIR (greens in regulation-74.12%), 15th for scoring average (69.00) and 15th for strokes gained approach (.827) on the PGA Tour.
Knox has also illustrated previously that he can play at a high level at this event. Russell finished 14th at the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
It should also be noted that Russell Knox is from Scotland. The man clearly loves playing coastal golf. An example of his love for coastal golf can be seen in his victory at the 2018 Irish Open.
Branden Grace $10,600
Grace finished ninth at last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. Grace also finished 28th at the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Daniel Berger $10,300
He has five top 30 finishes in his last seven events on the PGA Tour, including a ninth place result at last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. Berger currently ranks 25th in scoring average (69.19) and 20th in birdie average (4.46) on the PGA Tour.
Max Homa $9,800
Homa arrives at this week’s event on the heels of two consecutive top nine finishes. He also finished 10th at the 2019 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Tom Hoge $9,800
Hoge has been playing some outstanding golf in 2020. More specifically, Tom Hoge has four consecutive top 25 finishes on the PGA Tour.
Scott Stallings $9,200
Stallings has made the cut in seven of his last eight events on the PGA Tour. Additionally, he has three consecutive top 14 finishes at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, including a third place result in 2019.
As always, good luck!
