Tennessee Titans free agency 2020: Top 5 targets
By John Buhler
No, we shouldn’t expect the Titans to dabble with too many free agents formerly of other teams this offseason. Tennessee has so many key pieces to worry about in-house, as well as only having the 15th-best salary cap situation in the league. But if the Titans do pursue another an outside free-agent target, it should be for a guy they know very well from his days in the AFC South.
Yes, we’re talking about Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, formerly of the division-rival Houston Texans. Clowney butted heads with Texans head coach and general manager Bill O’Brien towards the end of his time in Houston. Despite being a three-time Pro Bowler, the former No. 1 overall pick was sent to Seattle for one year ahead of this past season.
While Seattle has plenty of cap space to bring him back at $59.7 million, his time in the Pacific Northwest always felt like a one-year trial. Clowney had statistically his worst season in 2019 outside of his injury-riddled rookie campaign in 2014. So he may not be back in Seattle on a new contract, which is all the more reason Tennessee needs to try to land him this spring.
Not only would the Titans not have to gameplan against Clowney twice annually as they had for years, but now they have a guy who is both very familiar with the division and a guy who is playing with a massive boulder on his shoulder from how things ended with the Texans. He’ll cost the Titans a pretty penny, but perhaps Vrabel is able to find 10-sack seasons out of Clowney?
