Second Round

WR. Penn State Nittany Lions. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. K.J. Hamler. 54. player. 806

We should expect the Bills to pursue a high-end receiver in free agency, whether it’s A.J. Green of the Cincinnati Bengals or Amari Cooper of the Dallas Cowboys. Landing either of them would be a huge boost to a Bills receiving corps that desperately needs a No. 1. However, they should still look to draft a guy like K.J. Hamler No. 54 overall out of Penn State in the second round.

Hamler only played two years at Penn State before going pro, but he did enough in his short time in State College to prove he’s worthy of being roughly a top-50 overall pick. The Second-Team All-Big Ten receiver is 5-foot-9 and 176 pounds, versatile enough to line up in multiple spots in Brian Daboll’s offense. He might start out as a gadget player, but he does have tremendous upside.

Hamler left Penn State with 98 career catches for 1,658 yards and 13 touchdowns, improving slightly from his redshirt freshman campaign and into his redshirt sophomore season. He may not have the size to be a No. 1 receiver in this league, but his consistency in a pro-style offense in Penn State has to be something the Bills will have to be in on.

Ultimately, Hamler will not be the panacea to the Bills’ receiving woes. However, you can line him up in the slot or put him outside the numbers to stretch the field. At the very least, he is the type of receiver who can make plays to help a contending team’s offense as a rookie. Look for him to get better as the season progresses. He won’t shrink playing in a cold climate either with Buffalo.
