NFL free agency 2020: Best quarterbacks available
There should be another quarterback shuffle this offseason, and these 10 signal callers will be in high demand for NFL franchises.
Quarterback play can make or break an NFL team. Strong evidence of this came in Super Bowl LIV, when Jimmy Garoppolo couldn’t make enough big plays for the San Francisco 49ers while Patrick Mahomes won the MVP by guiding the Kansas City Chiefs to 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
There is a very hefty free agent class of quarterbacks in 2020, and we could be in store for another great shuffle of starters with up to 8 teams looking for their new signal callers. Let’s take a look at the top 10 options, beginning with Ryan Fitzpatrick.
10. Ryan Fitzpatrick
The man of a million teams, Ryan Fitzpatrick had a strong year for the Miami Dolphins, throwing for over 3,500 yards with 20 touchdowns against 13 interceptions. Fitzpatrick will never be the guy to lead a team to the playoffs (he hasn’t gone once in his career), but he does a fine job holding the fort while a franchise looks for a long-term solution.
It doesn’t sound like Fitzpatrick is ready to hang it up, so this performance will at least get him into consideration for a backup job. The Dolphins are also a strong contender to bring Fitzpatrick back, and he could help mentor whichever quarterback they end up selecting in the draft.
9. Taysom Hill
There may not be a bigger wild card on this list than Taysom Hill. The New Orleans Saints found Hill on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad in 2017 and have utilized him as a true Swiss-army knife on their roster since.
Hill probably won’t be a starting quarterback elsewhere, but he can run, catch passes, play special teams, and expand the playbook with some gadget plays. The Saints will likely look to retain Hill, but don’t be shocked if another team takes a flier on seeing what Hill would look like in a more traditional role.
