Blues vs. Ducks postponed after Jay Bouwmeester collapses on the bench

The 36-year-old needed medical assistance after collapsing on the St. Louis Blues’ bench in the middle of Tuesday night’s game, which has since been postponed.

Update 10:00 a.m. ET: Blues general manager Doug Armstrong released a statement Tuesday night on the status of Bouwmeester, clarifying details of his medical incident:

"With 7:50 remaining in the first period of our game tonight, Jay Bouwmeester suffered a cardiac episode and collapsed on our bench after completing his shift. Thankfully, with the quick response of our medical trainers, Anaheim medical trainers and their team physicians, they were able to stabilize Jay. He was alert and moving all of his extremities as he was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center. Currently, Jay is conscious and alert as he undergoes further testing by Anaheim’s physicians. We will update Jay’s condition on Wednesday morning."

A scary scene unfolded in Anaheim on Tuesday night involving St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester. In the middle of the first period of the Blues game versus the Ducks, Bouwmeester collapsed on the St. Louis bench during a stoppage in play in the midst of a medical emergency.

Blues players immediately flagged down for help as soon as the incident started, halting the game as medical crews made their way to the St. Louis bench.

Both the Ducks and the Blues were sent to their respective locker rooms following the incident, with the news coming moments later that Tuesday night’s game would be postponed due to the event.

According to the Blues broadcast, Bouwmeester was conscious and alert, and was being taken to a nearby hospital in Anaheim after the incident unfolded. There is no update on what Bouwmeester’s medical emergency was on the Blues’ bench, though according to the radio play-by-play broadcast for the Blues, Chris Kerber, the paramedics had to use a defibrillator on the defenseman.

Support for Bouwmeester was swift to surface on social media via NHL team’s official Twitter accounts, and from fans and players as well after the incident.

Tuesday night was also the Blues’ annual father road trip, where players dads join the team on the road for an away game.

Bouwmeester is a 17-year NHL veteran, having played with the Blues, the Calgary Flames and the Florida Panthers throughout his career. The defenseman has been with St. Louis for eight seasons, and this year has nine points in 56 games played for the Blues.

With the news that the Ducks and Blues have postponed Tuesday’s game, the match between the two will be made up at a later date.
