4. Solutions for an inconsistent secondary

The Colts’ defensive backfield had a rough year in 2019 and it was one of the reasons the defense struggled after showing some promise the previous year under coordinator Matt Eberflus. The team finished 23rd in the league when it came to passing yards allowed per game. Frank Reich’s club allowed 37 offensive touchdowns and 29 of those scores came through the air.

Cornerback Pierre Desir was solid, totaling 50 tackles, three interceptions and a team-high 11 passes defended. Underrated and versatile Kenny Moore finished with 61 stops, 2.5 sacks, totaled three takeaways and knocked down three passes. And 2017 first-round pick Malik Hooker enjoyed a productive year despite missing three games. There were also some promise shown by 2019 draft picks in cornerback Rock Ya-Sin and safety Khari Willis.

The latter played in 14 contests, made nine starts and finished third on the team with 71 total tackles. Ya-Sin was fourth on the club with 61 tackles and added five passes defended and two takeaways.

Despite all the good numbers, the Colts allowed 17 TD passes in their final seven games – two or more aerial scores in six of those outings. Is it just a case of some of the younger faces getting more playing time? In any case, could Ballard add a veteran cornerback at the right price over the next few months?
