After weeks of waiting, the Champions League finally returns with the round of 16 kicking off on Tuesday. After finishing second to Juventus in the group stage, Atletico Madrid host Liverpool at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. The Reds finished first in their group, picking up 13 of 18 points and are looking to defend their Champions League title.
Atletico are fourth in La Liga, with 40 points in their 24 games. In their last game, Atletico drew 2-2 with Valencia. Diego Simeone’s team are again excellent defensively, conceding only 17 goals in La Liga this season. The problem for Atleti this season has been their struggle to score goals. Atletico have scored only 25 goals. Alvaro Morata leads the club with 10 goals and will be the focal point of Atleti’s attack on Tuesday, with both Joao Felix and Diego Costa injured and expected to miss the game.
Liverpool are running away with the Premier League title. The Reds have 76 of a possible 78 points. Manager Jurgen Klopp’s team has scored 61 goals in the Premier League while conceding only 15 times. In all competitions, the front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, and Mohamed Salah have combined for 44 goals and 32 assists.
In addition to a great front three, Liverpool have one of the best back fours in Europe. Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip have formed one of the most formidable pairings in Europe at center-back. While fullbacks Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are strong defenders who are capable of pushing forward and joining in on the attack. With all of Liverpool’s talent, they will be a challenge for any team in Europe to stop.
