Los Angeles Kings trade Tyler Toffoli to the Vancouver Canucks
By Mary Clarke
The Los Angeles Kings have officially parted ways with 27-year-old centerman Tyler Toffoli in the midst of a lost season.
Tyler Toffoli’s eight-year career with the Los Angeles Kings has come to an end. On Monday, the forward was traded from the Kings to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for forward Tim Schaller, forward prospect Tyler Madden, a 2020 second-round pick and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2022.
Los Angeles does not retain any salary in the Toffoli deal, as Schaller being sent back in the deal makes the salaries work under the cap for both teams.
The Canucks sit in the middle of a heated playoff race in the Pacific Division, sitting one point behind the first place Edmonton Oilers, who have 70 points on the season. Vancouver was leading the Pacific in January, but have gone 5-4-1 in their last 10 games and have given ground to the Oilers.
Toffoli is in the final year of a three-year, $13.8 million deal signed with the Kings back in 2017, making him a prime target for a team looking for a rental before he hits the free agent market on July 1.
This season, Toffoli has put up 34 points in 58 games for the Kings, as his 18 goals on the season lead all players on Los Angeles’ roster. Toffoli is on a 48-point pace this season, not a career best but better than last year’s showing of 34 points over a full season of work.
In return, the Kings get fourth-liner Schaller, who is in the final year of a two-year, $3.8 million deal. Madden was the Canucks’ third round pick from the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, and marks a steep price for Vancouver to pay for what is effectively a rental, unless Toffoli re-signs in the summer.
In the trade, the Canucks will forfeit their second-round pick in the 2020 draft this upcoming summer, meaning Vancouver will have seven draft picks should the team make the playoffs this spring due to the condition on their current first-round pick.
