Round 4 – Pick 128

J.R. Reed, Safety, Georgia

The only reason this pick is plausible is because of how Spagnuolo deployed his defense in the latter parts of the season. Kansas City used three and four safeties on the field at a time as they got deeper into the season.

The Chiefs could let Kendall Fuller walk in free agency after he transitioned from nickel corner to safety after he returned from a broken thumb in the middle of the season. Daniel Sorensen, who was a key cog in the Chiefs scheme, could become a cap casualty this offseason.

Reed was a four-year guy at Georgia and was a captain on one of the best defenses in the country the past couple years.

His speed isn’t terrific, but he wouldn’t be asked to do that in Kansas City because they have Thornhill. He has the ability to play close to the box, giving the Chiefs more of a thumper in the secondary.

Reed is good at the catch point in being physical, and is a willing tackler. The Chiefs could deploy him in the same role as Sorensen and get good production out of him.
