The Ottawa Senators have made their decision on J.G. Pageau, and traded him to the New York Islanders in exchange for a haul of draft picks.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau’s time with the Ottawa Senators is over, and he’s been traded to the New York Islanders. In return, the Senators are getting a conditional 2020 first-round pick, 2020 second-round pick and a conditional 2022 third-round pick.

The conditions of the draft picks are if the Islanders win the draft lottery and pick in the top three, the pick will then become a 2021 first-round pick. If the Islanders win the Stanley Cup in 2020, then the Senators will receive the 2022 third-round pick.

The 27-year-old center has so far been having a career year with the rebuilding Senators, already posting a career-high 24 goals and 40 points in 60 games. His shooting percentage has skyrocketed to 18 percent this season, and his ability as a two-way center made him a popular dark horse for the Selke trophy at the end of the season.

The Senators and Pageau went right down to the wire on a potential contract extension, and reportedly got pretty far into contract talks, but couldn’t reach an agreement in time. But for the return Ottawa got from the Islanders, this is absolutely the right move for a player who might not have a season like this again.

According to CapFriendly, the Senators now have 14 picks in the upcoming 2020 NHL Draft, including three first-round picks and four second-round picks.

As for the Islanders, Pageau is the pick up they have desperately needed heading into the playoff push and potential postseason run. The Islanders offense has dried up recently, recently scoring only two goals in a four-game stretch that briefly had them drop out of a playoff spot. His scoring and two-way ability will be a welcome addition to an Islanders looking to solidify their hold on a playoff spot, and a solid top-six forward option as they recover from recent injuries.
